FALL FRUITS IN ABUNDANCE: Most midseason apple varieties have arrived, but you can still find McIntoshes, Gravensteins, and Winter Bananas. Pears are at their maximum, with a dozen varieties from Bosc to Shinseikis. Later melon varieties are rolling in. And local grapes aboundbuy lots of Concords and squeeze them for juice; there's no flavor like it. Fanciers of more exotic fruit should look out for quinces. Delicata squash are so tasty, they're almost fruit. Potatoes in all varieties rule. And, since we don't live by food alone, shop for spring bulbs at the many farmers markets this week and next. Look for the Choice Bulbs sign. A sad reminder: This is the next-to-last weekend for Columbia City, Lake City, and Magnolia farmers markets. But don't repine University Heights and West Seattle markets run up to Thanksgiving.
