Before there was 9/11 there was 12/7, Pearl Harbor Day. So, with our troops fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, it's a perfect time to revisit this new 35mm print of Fred Zinneman's Oscar-winning 1953 adaptation of the James Jones bestseller. Anything but a pro-war bit of jingoism, Eternity reveals flawed men and women who are profoundly ambivalent about combat and unprepared for war. Their conflicts are mainly personal, and their resentments of the Army are mighty. Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr (pictured), Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Donna Reed, and Ernst Borgnine lead a powerhouse cast of players who embody America in all its rifts and divisions. Only war, it seems, can unite them to collective greatness. (NR) Runs Fri. Dec. 5-Thurs. Dec. 11 at the Varsity. BRIAN MILLER
