Hedwig and The Angry Inch

Even if you've already seen the John Cameron Mitchell/Stephen Trask cult hit in its resplendent movie incarnation, you're cheating yourself out of half the experience if you don't check it out live. The show was made to get in your faceā€”it howls right through whatever presuppositions you might have about gender roles, gay stereotypes, and rock musicals themselves, then surprises you with its intimate tenderness. There isn't any better place for it than Re-bar, and there isn't any better local lead for it than the magnificent Nick Garrison (pictured, left): He blew the roof off the joint as the triumphant transgender three years ago, and the fine point he put on the role can only have gotten sharper. Bonuses: Imogen Love, who's been fall-down funny with Garrison in Re-bar's Deflowered in the Attic, handles the directing chores this time; fierce, feline Bhama Roget (right) joins the band as Hedwig's brooding husband, Yitzak. Re-bar, 1114 Howell St., 206-323-0388. $16-$18. Opens Thurs. May 20. 8 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. Ends Sat. July 31. STEVE WIECKING
