Tap Dance Christmas Carol

Cheryl Johnson plays all three ghosts in this version of the Dicken's classic, in which Scrooge has turned his back on his life as a hoofer and will only be redeemed when he finds his "festive feet." Johnson's daffy Ghost of Christmas Present (pictured) is a marked contrast to her tour de force Ghost of Christmas, slicing through the space as a kind of ninja. Although it initially seems like a gimmick ("Tiny Tim Taps!"), this danced play cuts right to the gist of the original—that it's better to spend time with people doing something you love, than be alone with all the money in the world. Metropolitan Opera

It's the start of their broadcast season, their 74th year of bringing opera each Saturday afternoon to semi-retired high-school lunch ladies in Warren, Minnesota. Watch for Renee Fleming in Handel's Rodelinda (Jan. 1), Ben Heppner in Otello (Jan. 5), and Placido Domingo as Siegmund in Die Walküre (April 23). (Also tune in March 19, when Seattle Opera's Speight Jenkins is slated to be a panelist on their intermission Opera Quiz.) But up next is Tannhaüser, Wagner's tale of sin and redemption. Peter Seiffert's earned acclaim for the title role—genuine acclaim, not just relief that they were able to find any Wagner tenor at all these days.
