Establishments referred to as "institutions" are typically immune to culinary trends, thus qualifying Shorty's to a tee. For as long as Belltown's been Belltown, Shorty's has gone against the neighborhood's nouveau-riche grain and cast its lot with hot wieners and cold beer, the sum of which can be covered with whatever soiled greenbacks you've got scrunched up in your favorite pair of blue jeans from the prior night's misadventures. After a few cheap pitchers and showdowns with area pinball wizards, the rock show a few doors down at the vaunted Crocodile Cafe will begin to sound awfully attractive, which makes one wonder whether the two joints aren't in cahoots. It's all good either way. 2222 Second Ave. N., 206-441-5449.
