Pike Place Market Centennial

An all-day party marking the 100th birthday, to the day, of this local landmark will open with a reenactment of opening day—a procession of horse-drawn produce carts and actors in period dress. The Janus-faced festival continues with Market buskers (at 10 a.m.), remarks by Mayor Nickels and others (noon), birthday cake (12:40 p.m.), games and activities (including chef demos on the Seattle Weekly Culinary Stage, 1-5 p.m.), a salmon toss (1:45 pm.), and roving buskers performing from the bed of a 1936 truck. The evening bash in Steinbrueck Park (6-10 p.m.) will include all-star band The Iconics (including members of the Presidents of the USA, Pearl Jam, Harvey Danger, and the Dudley Manlove Quartet), ageless jazz vocalist Ernestine Anderson, the Total Experience Gospel Choir, Circus Contraption’s twisted Americana, and Artis the Spoonman.
