The last album from this San Fran trio, and the first that signaled their move from Tigerbeat 6 to Kill Rock Stars, was called “a surreal collision of disparate impulses” by some dude who meant that as a compliment. From the sound of this summer’s Now You Are This, it might’ve been a growing pain. Eric, Dave, and Indra are standing not just a little taller, with fleshier, infinitely more substantial arrangements that you can still enjoy without deconstructing. Meaning: While the spastic,post-punk band of three years ago has certainly grown up, Numbers’ Moogs and melodies are intact, and you can bet they’d still rock a basement party. With ye olde local counterparts the Intelligence, Partman Parthorse, and Flexions.
