Flying Up From Rio

A smoldering guitar duo leaps centuries and borders

Sérgio Assad’s Tahhiyya li Ossoulina, from his album Jardim abandonado with his brother and guitar-duo partner Odair, opens with a rippling lyrical meditation, dreamy as sunlight glinting on water, before breaking suddenly into a driving finish full of whirling, flying-finger melodies and guitar-tapping percussion effects. The pair, who’ve collaborated with violin bad girl Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, present a similar split personality in tonight’s concert program, offering music from the baroque period (Rameau and Scarlatti) and from their homeland (Villa-Lobos, Jobim, Gismonti) as part of the Seattle Symphony’s Guitar Series.
