The building blocks of Seattle’s premier art collections

If you want to keep an eye on Seattle’s art scene, it’s essential to visit the Henry and the Frye at least once every other month. The gallery by the U and the always-free museum on First Hill are each home to a wealth of permanent works. And each year’s scheduled exhibits of contemporary (and historical) artwork are often a testament to the knowledge and good taste of both houses’ curators. In “Dreaming the Emerald City,” which opened Saturday at the Frye, the collections of Charles and Emma Frye (primarily German and Austrian art from the 19th and 20th centuries) and Horace C. Henry (focused on American and French paintings from the same era) are brought together for the first time. Through these and other works that have been in hiding, plus archival photos and exhibition programs, we can compare and contrast these collectors’ passions and implicit hopes for the future of art-going in their city.
