X, Skybombers, Guns & Rossettti

Punk pioneers mark their 31st anniversary

X is the 24th letter of the alphabet. X is one of two letters used in the game tic-tac-toe. X is commonly used in multiples with the letter O to represent “hugs and kisses.” X is used by pirates to map buried treasure. X marks the spot. The X band is a range of microwave frequencies used by some types of satellites, radar, and wireless broadband. The X-Men are mutants. Three X’s together are used to rate adult films. X is a punk-rock band from Los Angeles. They made their way into the national spotlight in the early 1980s. With lyrics like “We’re desperate/Get used to it/It’s kiss or kill/Coca-Cola and a Motorola kitchen/Naugahyde and a tie-dye T-shirt/Last night everything broke,” X is what Bob Dylan might sound like if he were a punk rocker. Exene Cervenka and John Doe sing harmonies in their own DIY style over the stripped-down yet melodic guitar playing of Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake’s drumming. X is punk that flirts raw and dirty with pop. All four original members will be playing at the Showbox, 1426 First Ave., www.ticketmaster.com. $25. 7 p.m. Sun., March 30 (all ages) and Mon., March 31 (21 and over). BRION KINNE

Mon., March 31, 7 p.m., 2008
