The last time I saw Tom Petty at the Gorge, I took a bunch of mushrooms. The success of my trip pretty much hinged on whether or not he played "Don't Come Around Here No More," which he did. Hence, Petty is one of my two "safe" acts for psychedelics, the other being, of course, the Allman Brothers Band. Steve Winwood, however, is not a safe act not by a longshot. Other than the time I inadvertently swallowed five hits of liquid acid at a Phish show in Vegas (inadvertent because I only intended to ingest one), my single zaniest trip came when I ate some 'shrooms before a Traffic concert at the Gorge while camping at nearby Vantage in college. At the sparsely-attended show, I kicked back on the grassy knoll during "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and watched the clouds turn into Santa Claus' beard. It was lovely. By the time I had to drive home, I thought I'd come down. I hadn't. Before me, I saw three roads, and considered turning myself in to the local authorities. Instead, I took the middle road and made it back to camp in one piece. Suffice it to say, I won't be taking drugs before either of the Petty-Winwood shows this weekend, unless tequila counts as a drug.
