Washington State Book Awards

This year’s Washington State Book Awards are being bestowed to six writers in categories including poetry, fiction, and history. For once, Sherman Alexie (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian) won’t be the biggest name in attendance. That’s because David R. Montgomery just picked up a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant for Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations. But let’s not forget about the hard-working, more unsung Matt Ruff (Bad Monkeys). Also among the honorees are poet Samuel Green, historian Coll Thrush, and illustrator Laura Dronzek. All will deliver remarks and sign copies of their work. Then they’ll combine their superpowers to mend the economy, solve the energy crisis, and bring peace to mankind. Kidding! Unless on the page, of course, in which case anything’s possible.
