Toy Story 1 and 2 in 3D

Is this a good idea? Is this a necessary idea? Probably not. But Pixar has put two of its very best titles through some magical digital process to add three-dimensionality to its CGI classics from 1995 and 1999. In the former, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen give voice to the rival toys vying for leadership of their wandering, plastic tribe. In the latter, which I would argue is superior to the original, Buzz leads the crew on a rescue mission when Woody and love interest Jessie (Joan Cusack) fall into the hands of an evil collector. But really, the terror here is of childhood ending, that the toys' owner has outgrown them. "Woody's been shelved," one toy despairs. Says Jessie of their pre-tween owners, "They forget you." And that sad suggestion of childhood lost lingers beyond TS2's happy ending. The 188-minute double-feature, which includes intermission, will open at several area theaters. And, yes, Toy Story 3 is in the works for 2010, and it'll likely appear in both flavors: traditional and 3-D. (G) BRIAN MILLER
