Mystery Train

Jim Jarmusch's 1989 comedy, set in and around an old fleabag hotel in Memphis, is a treat for its large, eccentric cast. Steve Buscemi, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Tom Noonan, Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, and Nicoletta Braschi are just some of the denizens and visitors who are haunted, in one way or another, by the ghost of Elvis. Mystery Train is more of an anthology film than coherent whole, but it's enjoyable for Jarmusch's typically deadpan writing and relaxed pacing. The film feels more observed than written, as if the director were so pleased to have assembled his oddball cast of actors and musicians that he just lets the camera roll. (R) BRIAN MILLER
