You'd think from this week's shows at the Paramount that all French electronic acts secretly long to make soft rock. There's Justice, whose latest album trades their hard rock techno for limp '70s prog and pop, and then there's M83, who have made the shift far more successfully and organically. With 2008's Saturdays = Youth and last year's outstanding Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, onetime bedroom electronics producer Anthony Gonzalez has established himself as an adroit maker of dreamy, 80s-styled synth rock with explicitly big-screen ambitions and saxophone solos to match. It's a deep and timely well of nostalgia, and M83 tap it with undeniable flair. With I Break Horses. ERIC GRANDY.
