1. The tiny Japanese bakery Umai Do, at 18th and Jackson, is closing its doors at the end of August. Owner Art Oki says he plans to move his shop to Beacon Hill to “co-locate with Hiroshi’s Japanese take out” on 15th Avenue South beginning at the end of October or beginning of November. Ultimately, Oki hopes to open his own shop again.

2. Kickin’ Boot Whiskey Kitchen, as well as all Washington State Matador restaurants, have announced plans on August 7 from 11 a.m. to close to donate all proceeds to victims of the wildfires in Eastern Washington. They’re funneling proceeds through to nonprofit organization Band of Brothers Northwest, which will purchase gift cards for necessities like food, water, and medical supplies to those affected. You can also donate directly to Band of Brothers Northwest at each restaurant location.

3. Ballard brewery Reuben’s Brews celebrates its second anniversary tomorrow at Brouwer’s Café in Fremont. The Reuben’s folks will be on hand and pouring from four taps and a cask starting at 5 p.m. They’re also having a party on August 9 at their tap room, with details still to come.

4. The Atlantic published a history of the Slurpee, down to the decidedly unappetizing descriptions found in the machine’s patent: “semi-frozen drink comprising tiny frozen particles each of which contains the proper proportions of water, flavoring and carbon dioxide."
