A Photographer's Journey Through Pioneer Square After Dark

"My Backyard" is an on-going photo series by Thomas Tran documenting what he considers a community stripped to the bare necessities required to sustain life, and the sub-economies that have grown out of it.

Since Tran began working in Pioneer Square, he has been exposed to the extreme imbalance of wealth in Seattle – experiencing both ends of the spectrum daily. He is drawn to this community with less, as he wants to give a voice to those who have lost theirs.

Pictured below, in order, are a makeshift candy stand, a loosie cigarette vendor, and a series of heroin users.

This and more of Tran's work will be on display at Zeitgeist Coffee March 3-April 6. An artist's reception will be held Thursday, 6-8 p.m. For more First Thursday events, see this week's First Thursday Pick List.
