Cloud Cult: Since their beginnings nearly 20 years ago as Craig Minowa’s solo studio project, this Minnesota band has expanded both in personnel and musical ambition: Their sound is an expansive hybrid of atmospheric rock, string-led folk reveries, and electronic textures. With JBM. The Neptune. 7 p.m. $17 adv./$20 DOS. All ages.
Tuesday, May 7
Secret Chiefs 3: The musical output of Trey Spruance’s ever-shifting instrumental rock group (there have been dozens of members since its 1995 inception) plays like a music-nerd fever dream, combining elements of Middle Eastern and Indian music, surf rock, and death metal. Sunset Tavern. 8 p.m. $20.
Wednesday, May 8
Os Mutantes: Conceived in the midst of Tropicalia, a Dada-esque Brazilian cultural movement that took root in the ’60s, Os Mutantes remain kaleidoscopic. The group—part psychedelic, part prog, part protest music—has influenced worldly musicians from David Byrne to Beck, whose 1998 album Mutations is a tribute to the band. Triple Door. $28 adv./$35 DOS. All ages.
Thursday, May 9
Javelin: This Luaka Bop–signed Brooklyn duo makes unpredictable sample-based electronic music, veering from undulating electro-pop to polyrhythmic dance grooves. With Helado Negro, Jamaican Queens. Barboza. 8 p.m. $12 adv.
Friday, May 10
Cahalen Morrison: On his latest album, Our Lady of The Tall Trees (a collaboration with guitarist Eli West), Morrison weaves old-timey tales with tight harmonies and nimble banjo work. With Mighty Squirrel. Fremont Abbey. 9 p.m. $8 adv./$10 DOS. All ages.
Saturday, May 11
Born Ruffians: Seattle fans of the Toronto art-rock band are in luck: this show is the last scheduled date the group will play, after cutting off its tour for April’s Birthmarks for undisclosed reasons. With Moon King. Barboza. 7 p.m. $12 adv.
Sunday, May 12
The Appleseed Cast: This band is frequently tagged as post-rock, but its songs scan better as extended, muscular jams from the formative days of “emo” (i.e., Sunny Day Real Estate) than guitar-led micro-symphonies. The band is touring behind April’s Illumination Ritual, its first release since 2009. With Hospital Ships, Wild Arms. Chop Suey. 8 p.m. $12 adv.
