In an exclusive a story by Joel Connelly and Jake Ellison, the Seattle PI has published a letter dated February 12 from Washington Governor Jay Inslee to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder - a letter that details Washington's plans for the implementation of I-502 and legal weed in our state. While the letter is lengthy - stretching five pages - the gist of it is straightforward: Washington's got this shit under control, we won't become a lawless weed playground now that marijuana is legal for adults, and anyone who violates the laws created by I-502 will still be vigorously prosecuted.
With Holder still having yet to make a definitive decision on how to react to legalized marijuana in Washington and Colorado, the PI describes Inslee as "eager to convince the feds to go easy."
According to the PI's story:
In his signed, five-page letter to Holder, Inslee states:
"... our approach must be thorough and disciplined, with public safety being our paramount responsibility. I am personally committed to having a well-regulated, disciplined system with tight inventory controls and close coordination with law enforcement."
The PI's story also notes that while there's growing optimism that the feds may let Washington's experiment with legal marijuana play out, Attorney General Bob Ferguson is nonetheless preparing for a legal battle - should it come to that.
